2011

1st March  to 24th April  SEYDISFJ R U | U R JFSIDYES, Montgomerys Café, The work comprises of photographs taken by the artists on their residency at Skaftfell Cultural Centre in Seyðisfjörður (http://www.mharibaxter.com/projects.php?e=18). The backlit folded images here presented, are those of images projected onto curtains in the Waverley Bar, Edinburgh. This was an integral part of a previous exhibit ‘Iceland Meets Scotland on an Edinburgh Old Town Roof’ in March 2008 (http://www.mharibaxter.com/projects.php?e=22). These images erupted in the cavernous Glasgow Arches in the Summer of 2008 (http://www.mharibaxter.com/projects.php?e=23) and now regurgitate in Montgomery’s café. The light boxes, akin to beacons, illuminate the space and reminisce of the artists’ journey through a lava tube with only the light of headlamps to guide them. The missing letters in the title SEYDISFJ R U | SEYDISJ R U pays homage to the town’s name Seyðisfjörður that is represented in neon letters on small hill presents a gapped welcome to the buildings beyond. The absence of letters in the town’s sign echos the absent presence in the empty dark windows of the Bakaríið. Iceland has but a handful of brick buildings and one is in Seyðisfjörður- the old bakery, built using bricks from the abandoned furnace of a whaling station in Mjóifjörður. Sumarbústaður Péturs is an uninhabited summerhouse, falling into disrepair outside of the town, belonging to a character named Petur, who runs the Technical Museum. The museum houses Iceland’s first telegraph station from which the very first cable ran from Seyðisfjörður to Scotland. Referred to as the town’s philosopher by the locals, Petur has been known to stay at his summerhouse on one occasion and even then it was on the ground outside. There are a number of characters in the town- past and present. The late artist Dieter Roth himself had a summerhouse and workshop in Seyðisfjörður. In Hús Ásgeirs Emilssonar, local artist Ásgeir Emilsson painted the exterior of his house. There is a curious quality to this particular image, the folds of the curtain backdrop comparable to canvas- its surface painted with light from the projected image. The brightly lit, iconic form of the Blár Kirkja is crisply defined with its ecclesiastical outline. The church originally stood at Dvergasteinn (Dwarfstone) further along the fjord, but was later moved to a site above Vestdalseyri on the north side of the fjord. It was blown off its foundation, and then rebuilt in its present location in 1922. While partly built from the timbers of the old church, the present building differs considerably from the original. Upon closer inspection, on the lower left of the Blue Church, a small reproduction of the dwarf stone can be seen. A work made by the Austrian artist Eva Thebert, a modest memorial to the original dwarf stone: a triangular, pockmarked, erratic lump that lies further up the fjord. According to legend this piece of sandstone, that to this day houses dwarves, crossed the water from one side of the fjord to the other, to be nearer the church. There were reports of lights seen hovering across the water on the night- in the morning the stone had moved to its present location on the north side of the fjord. From the bright light of the church we leave Seyðisfjörður, descending once again through the lava tube Fara út úr hraun helli- in to the veins of urban Glasgow. 9-11 Radnor Street G3 7UA Glasgow, United Kingdom Cafe opening hours: Mon–Fri 8am–5.50pm; Sat/Sun 9am–5.50pm

Produced collaboratively, this mixture of projections, installation and sound pieces will be presented in the stairwell and on the roof top of an Old Town tenement. Baxter and MacRobert studied at the Listaháskóli Íslands (Iceland Academy of Arts), Reykjavík in 2006 and last year made a return journey to the small harbour town of Seyðisfjörður in the east fjords. It was in Seyðisfjörður that Baxter attended a workshop in conjunction with the Dieter Roth Academy- which honours the late German born Swiss artist who lived and worked extensively in Iceland. Drawing upon their experience of the people and place ‘SEYDISFJ R U ’ explores the life of this small town, so far flung from the hub of Reykjavík.
